Bad Dog Behavior: A Hopeless Golden Retriever?

bad dog behaviorIf you are at your wits end and have tried every trick in the book to train your golden into the perfect dog but are always falling short, do not despair. You may still be able to curb that bad dog behavior, and breath a sigh of relief. You may need some extra help though.

Keep in mind that there are no bad dogs. They do not deliberately misbehave just to get under our skin. Most behavior problems come from a lapse in training. Bad habits can be formed, and they can also be curbed. Consider the circumstances surrounding your canine friend: How did you acquire this dog? Was it rescued from a shelter or did you buy from a breeder?

If it came from a shelter or pound, chances are he was neglected or even abused at some point, and I can bet not properly trained to begin with. But there is still hope to cure his bad dog behavior. It will take a lot of time and patience, but it has been done time and again.

Doing some research on the breed is a good place to start, as not every dog has the same temperament. Each breed is different, just as people are different. Some breeds are naturally hyper and bred to run and hunt, some prefer to lounge about and are hard to get a rise out of.

Proper training techniques applied from a young age are preferred, but if your pooch is an older addition to the family, these can still be used. Dogs are very intelligent and prefer to earn your approval, when they are rewarded with high praises and a treat!

If your dog has been obedient up until a certain point, take a look at what may be prompting this undesirable behavior. Have there been changes made to his schedule or surroundings? Are you spending less time with him due to heavy work loads, etc.? These types of issues can cause bad dog behavior. Once you figure out the cause, a solution will be at hand.

The unmentionable aspect may be that your pet is just not meant to be with you. Some strays or rescued dogs never learn to adjust outside of a shelter or foster home. This is sad, but it does happen. They become accustomed to being with numerous others and the certain type of attention they receive in this environment. If you decide that your situation is not without hope, there is plenty of help available for you to turn your bad dog behavior around into a faithful companion for years to come.
