Dog Housebreaking: Getting Started With Your New Puppy

dog housebreakingSome facts to remember about young dogs is they will need to potty six or more times per day until they develop good muscle control over the bladder, which is around 4 months of age. I will stress the most important aspect of dog housebreaking: No physical punishment must ever be used, or all of your efforts are useless!

Bring the pup to the toileting area promptly after eating or drinking, and be consistent. This is one way of training him to use the appropriate spot. Family involvement can really come in here, because this will be a good time for socializing as well. If the pup does his business, give lots of praise and positive reinforcement every time.

If an accident occurs, and you find it after the fact, show your disapproval but do not reprimand, as he will not understand. If you catch him in the act, a harsh no will suffice, and whisk him outside. Let him finish if needed in the designated area and clean up. Make sure to rid the area of both the mess and odor as well, or he will smell this and keep going to that same spot.

Always praise when he goes in the right area, and never reprimand after the fact. He will not associate your displeasure with the act and therefore will not learn anything from it. This is a good part of dog housebreaking, and probably one of the most important.

Yelling or hitting is not they way to get your dog trained. On the contrary, it may cause him to become skittish and there will be increased accidents due to nervousness or fear. If your dog loves and respects you, he will try hard to please you and earn your praises.

If you are unable to supervise your pup, it will be extremely difficult to train him, and being prepared for these instances should be considered. Ask someone to stop over or hire someone if needed to come by and let him out, perhaps take him for a walk if possible. This is good socialization as well.

Whichever method of dog housebreaking you choose to use, consistence is the key. Use praise for acceptable behavior and soon your puppy will be letting you know when it is time to go out. Dogs are very intelligent, and by using proper techniques they learn easily and rarely forget what they are taught.
