Dog Leash Training: Essential Tips For
Success
The main objective in any style of training
is to establish a close relationship with a dog and its
owner. In dog leash training, if you the owner, think of
yourself as not only your dogs master but head of the
pack, so to speak, you have half of the battle won from
the beginning.
In
their wild state, dogs have the natural instinct to obey
their dominant member of the pack. The same holds true
with their domesticated cousins who we have adopted over
the years. By using this instinct to your advantage,
training will be so much easier.
Dog leash
training is essential in the working class
breeds where a high level of reliability is present. The police
force, fire departments and rescue squads all use dogs to some
degree, and these canines are extensively trained in this
manner.
For
this type of training to be successful, the dog must
implicitly trust whoever is on the other end. Therefore
it is recommended that its owner also be the handler.
After all, you will be the one walking and playing with
him each day, or why have a dog to begin
with?
It
is very important to remember that the leash is merely a
tool to aid in training. It is not meant to be used for
disciplinary measures at any time. Varying degrees of
some force are necessary in order to correct the dogs
movements.
In
the beginning of training, and this should be when your
pup is at least twelve weeks of age, it is easier to
allow your pet to become accustomed to the leash by
simply hooking it to the collar and let him drag it
around for short periods of time. Once he is used to
this, you can then begin formal schooling. Never leave
him unattended at any time.
A
simple short tug and a verbal command will work to
correct any deviation from your course. If he constantly
pulls and attempts to take you for a walk, a
firmer tug can be used, but no excessive force should be
necessary. Stop, command him to sit, and once he is calm
you can proceed. Keep training periods brief, and use
praise for good behavior.
Every
breed is different according to temperament, and some are
stubborn as well as hyper, so muster up some patience and
be persistent! Never allow your dog to take command or
you will lose your authority.
By
being consistent, keeping your sessions short and
offering praise for a job well done, perhaps a treat
reward as well; dog leash training will be well worth the
effort. When out for walks in the community or park, it
will not a struggle of wills and both of you can enjoy
the scenery.
