Ask neighbors and friends which school they use and the type of training that is offered. Some schools offer specialized training based on a dog’s breed and type of training desired. You can also get recommendations from your veterinarian or local pet store. If most of your friends are using the same school, it must be effective. 

Experience 

If you had the choice of a new trainer just entering the field or a seasoned veteran, which would you choose? Expertise comes with years of service. I do not intend to insult new trainers, however, experience produces real results. Note: Just because the school is new does not mean the trainer is as well. 

Sincerity and devotion 

The person running the  dog obedience school should be an avid dog lover. Why? This will ensure that your canine will be treated with respect and compassion. It is easy to spot a dog lover. Rather, my Collie knows immediately who likes dogs. Pay attention to how yours reacts around different people and it will become evident. 

Handling skills and training tactics 

If you spend some time observing, you will be able to tell if the trainer has the desired skills. As I mentioned earlier, a class is more than leash training and learning to sit/stay. The trainer should be able to teach complex commands. Your dog should follow commands off leash by the end of the beginners course. 

Once you have found a dog obedience school or trainer that meets the above criteria, let the fun begin. You may wish to let someone else do the handling, but it is far more rewarding to work along with your dog. It is the opportunity to further bond with your pet.
