Dog Training Advice: Leash Training Your Pit Bull Terrier

It is recommended that leash training begin around six or seven weeks old. You will be spending lots of time outside while house breaking your pup anyway, so take advantage of this dog training advice and get some additional training in at this time.

Keep your sessions short, as your pup’s attention span is at this point, and allow him some freedom. No strict training is needed and not recommended either. Schooling should be enjoyable for both of you. Keep a loose reign on his leash, unless he begins pulling excessively, which may occur.

A good way to get your pup to accept a leash is two attach it to his collar and drop it to the ground. Allow him to move about freely while pulling the leash behind for brief periods. Never leave him unattended, as a choking hazard exists.

Use his name frequently, call him and get him to return to you. He will learn quickly the command “come” if high praise and a small treat reward are waiting for him. Two minute intervals for these training sessions are sufficient, but do them consistently each time you take him outside for toileting and play time.

Your back yard is the preferred area to begin leash training. There are few distractions and less risk of interruption by other animals and people. Once he accepts the leash, begin picking it up, and while holding it lightly, begin walking and encouraging him to follow. Give high praise when he obeys your commands to come.

If   your puppy is very strong willed, you may consider trying a choker collar for training purposes only. If you are met with resistance, a short firm tug on the leash will prompt him to follow your lead. Additional dog training advice: before you begin leash training, your pup should know his basic commands, one of which is the word no.

If you follow proper technique and always use positive reinforcement, keep your sessions short and incorporate some treats, your Pit Bull will be leash trained in no time, and ready for advanced training. Remember: Keep it fun for both of you!
