Dog Training Tips: Handling An Aggressive Canine

dog training tipsIf your dog has not been properly socialized, it does not know how to interact with other canines or strange people. Showing aggression is his way of protecting himself and you. Socialization should be started from a young age to allow your dog to become accustomed to frequent interaction with other dogs, animals and children as well.

A good dog training tip to introduce your canine to someone new is to have them offer him a treat. For safety’s sake, keep your pet leashed. Let the dog, with your supervision of course, approach your friend, who should remain calm and be at his level so they do not seem so intimidating. Allow the dog to accept the treat and watch his reaction. If he growls, tug the leash, say no and lead him away.

Always keep him leashed when out in public, and if approached by another dog be prepared to correct him immediately if he shows any aggression. The park is one place you will find other dogs to casually interact with, but avoid other aggressive canines at all costs.

Another dog training tip: If your canine friend has been recently adopted, his aggression may be due to past abuse and or neglect. This is a said but true reality in a lot of cases. All rescue dogs should be tested before they are adopted out to make sure they are stable.

Food aggression is one obvious sign of neglect, and professional assistance should be sought out to determine if your dog can be rehabilitated successfully. Keep in mind that not all cases are hopeless. It is only with severe cases of aggression that an animal will be put down.

Using a muzzle is one way to keep both you and others safe during training and socialization, until your dog has shown it no longer requires it. Give your dog lots of positive attention and help build up his self esteem and trust in you. This will aid in the recovery process.

Do try every method available and seek professional help if necessary before deciding to have the animal destroyed. If the aggression has appeared suddenly, there must be a reason for it. By paying attention to your dogs actions and doing some investigating the cause can often be found and the corrected.
