Free Puppy Training: Potty Training Made Easy

free puppy trainingWhich technique to use will depend largely on your dogs age. Very young pups under twelve weeks of age have no control over bladder and bowel and will relieve themselves anywhere at anytime. In this case, the following technique can be used.

The isolation technique

This may sound cruel, but it sounds worse than it is. You choose one small room in the home where the pup will sleep, eat and toilet. Puppy -proof the area and paper the whole floor. A laundry room is ideal for this. If there is no door, use a child’s safety gate.

Put his bedding, food and water, along with some toys in there and he is all set. Let him go where he may. After some time, and this varies from breed to breed, you will notice that he shows a preference for a certain area. This is when you remove all other paper.

Your pup is now paper trained and ready for the next step.

Crate training

Once a dog shows a preference for a toilet, he will not relieve himself where he sleeps, and so crate training is very effective. NOTE:  the crate is used only for sleeping and traveling-not for punishment. Of course, crate him if he must be left alone, but not for extended periods. Take him outside immediately in the morning, shortly after a meal and before retiring for the night.

When your dog is out and among the family, pay close attention to the signs that he needs to toilet: sniffing, circling , whining, etc. Get him outside right away. If there is an accident, it is because those signs were missed. Diligence and consistency will make potty training stress free.

Having a regular feeding schedule will help as well to anticipate when he will need to go out. Most pups will need to toilet up to six times per day, until they gain control over bladder and bowel. This also varies. Never limit fluid intake or dehydration may occur.

Always praise when he toilets in the appropriate spot so he knows he has done something good. If you find an accident after the fact, it is useless to scold because he will not know what he did wrong. Simply show disappointment and clean it up. If you catch him in the act, a stern NO and whisk him outside to finish if he hasn’t. Once he finishes, give praise.

By following these free puppy training tips, your dog’s experience, as well as your own, will go smoothly and your floors will stay clean!
