Guard Dog Training: Teaching Your Dog To
Guard
Choosing
a breed
Doberman Pinschers, German Shepards, and the notorious
Rottweilers have the genetic makeup to become guard or watch
dogs. The latter is intimidating by its looks alone. Whichever
you choose, plan on spending extensive time into training.
Before guard dog training is begun, this dog must have basic
obedience training or more under his
collar.
Let’s look at the difference between guarding and watching. As
a guard dog, he will be trained to attack an intruder as well
as alert you to his presence. A watch dog merely alerts and
intimidates by ceaseless barking and
growling.
As the owner, it is recommended that you take an active part in
your dogs training, as it is you and your possessions he will
be guarding. If you decide to train him yourself, a strict
schedule will need to be kept, and a new set of commands will
need to be learned.
Guard dog
training can be
quite intense, so you need to be in control at all times.
A good working relationship with your dog should be well
established before opening this new area of development.
You are responsible for deciding how your dog will react
in certain instances.
Training will focus on different scenarios, and the dog should
react appropriately to each before moving on to another. If he
has had
advanced obedience training, a word or phrase is all it
will take to set him into guard
mode.
You do not want your dog to be distracted while working, so
train him to avoid these distractions: other dogs, cats, etc.
His attention should remain on doing his job. How loud he barks
is also intimidating. Training your dog to only bark when there
is danger or an intruder present is another issue, but your
neighbors will appreciate it.
The easiest way to learn guard dog
training is to
either observe at an academy or better yet, enroll in a
course where you will have professionals there to guide
you. Either way, it is a serious decision when training
an animal attack, and one that should not be taken
lightly.
