House Training Puppies: Excessive Licking
And How To Stop It
Excessive
licking begins like this: It is nice to be greeted by your
best friend after a hard day at work. A nice lick on the
hand or face says they miss you when you are away. After
all, your dog can’t talk, so how else can they communicate
affection? When the greeting will not stop after a few
friendly slurps, there is a
problem.
Your canine friend follows you from room to room, and each time
your hand is within easy access, it comes up wet. It will not
stop at the hands either. Ankles are prime targets as well as
legs, if they are exposed. Sometimes the only way to avoid an
unwanted bath is to keep moving! It is quite embarrassing when
there are guests visiting who are targeted and do not know what
to do, except to give you beseeching looks for
help.
This type of
excessive dog licking can be stopped, and you will learn
how in a minute. Lets discuss what may trigger this behavior to
begin with. If your pet has suffered some sort of injury or
skin irritation, you may have noticed it licking the area in
attempt to get some relief. A small cut on the leg or paw and a
run-in with fleas will trigger
licking.
This in turn could turn into a compulsion if not dealt with
accordingly. Humans develop obsessive compulsive disorders, our
canine friends can as well. Stress is another trigger. Is your
pet often alone? Perhaps your work schedule has changed and you
are not spending as much time with him as you were. Thinking
about when this problem developed will help to treat
it.
Ways to stop excessive dog
licking
Once he has given you the normal greeting of a slurp or two,
draw your hand or face away and say: that’s enough now, and
attempt to go about your business. If every time you sit down
or feel a lick on your foot or leg and he continues, draw away
and repeat the phrase. Say : No-that’s enough
now.
Do not yell or show any emotion, especially any form of delight
by this behavior like giggling, or he will think you actually
enjoy this and turn it into a game. Let your friends and family
know these new rules, and inform your guests of how to deal
with it as well. If he is turned away from everyone he targets,
eventually it will dwindle down to an acceptable
level.
One way to help prevent this behavior, as never allow your dog
to lick your hands if you have food residue or some other
tantalizing scent on your skin. This will only encourage
excessive dog licking. A determent can also be used by applying
an undesirable substance on frequent target areas. Consult your
vet or local pet shop for available
products.
