How
to Deal With and Prevent Dog Separation
Anxiety
Leaving your dog or pup at home can be a
bad experience for both of you. Thus, a bit of
preparation is needed beforehand. Trying to get your dog
to understand that you’ll only be gone for a little while
is essential for alleviating stress.
Fighting
Separation anxiety for dogs
Whenever your dog appears to be distressed
every time you leave your house, he is probably experiencing
separation anxiety. Chewing things up, scratching
the door, and hysterical barking are just a few
signs. Most
doggies want to always be as close to their humans as possible,
and those that have not been taught to stay alone can exhibit
unwanted behaviours as a result. The best way to approach this
is to get your pet to gradually learn that it’s okay to be
alone.
Preventing dog seperation
anxiety
Here are a few simple tips you can try in order to make
your puppy comfortable when home alone.
·
Start by introducing
the dog or pup to the crate. Crate him in for short
periods of time while you’re present and gradually increase the
amount of time in which he’s
crated.
·
Always reward him for
being quiet by giving him calm praise and a few treats, such as
a piece of dog food. At first, just leave him in
there for a few minutes. Gradually increase his time
in his crate.
·
Reward him with a piece
of dog food and attention whenever he lies quietly away from
you.
Dogs with separation anxiety need to be taught that it’s
okay to be quiet and
relaxed.
·
If you have to work,
you should consider hiring a walker to take your dog out once a
day.
·
Try keeping your
schedule similar every day, even when you’re off, in order to
make things easier on your
dog.
·
Also, never forget to
give your dog a chance to run around. Exercise is important for
dogs who must be left alone every
day.
Most pups aren’t ready to be given freedom unsupervised
in your home until they’re at least a year and a
half.
Entering and exiting
Make your leaving and arriving back
uneventful. If
you make leaving your home a big, dramatic production of
hugs and kisses, your dog will assume that it is indeed a
big deal. This
will only make the dogs separation anxiety a lot worse.
When you return, don’t go directly to him and make a
fuss. Only do
this if you’re gone a lot longer than you
thought. In
such a case, take him outside right away as he may need to
relieve himself very badly. Making him wait is not
only mean, but will cause him to make a mess inside his
crate anyway.
However, if you weren’t gone for too long, then you can wait
a moment before approaching him.
Separation anxiety signs
Most dogs whine when left alone, and young puppies
may even cry.
True separation anxiety causes destructive and disruptive
behaviours in dogs.
Separation anxiety in dogs can cause them to bark
constantly, whine, tear up a room, and make house training
mistakes. This
will begin happening as soon as you leave, and you may want to
consider consulting with a qualified dog
trainer.
