K9 dog training: Tips To Successfully Train Any Dog

k9 dog trainingA new puppy can be more than a handful, and when you have young children, k9 dog training is a must. A playful act could develop into a strong willed bite in a second. It is important to supervise not only your dog but your children as well when they interact.

Some breeds have a natural tendency towards aggression. These dogs are often used as watch or guard dogs, but they can also make good family pets as well, if trained accordingly.

Chewing is a normal habit, especially during the teething phase, so keeping a few chew toys at hand and using them as a distraction from gnawing your furniture will help to impede this behavior. Toys need not be elaborate. Your pup won’t care either way. Rawhide is often a favorite for most dogs.

Involve the whole family in your k9 dog training sessions, so he will not be confused. Everyone should learn basic commands and hand signals that go with them. Dogs do not speak English. They associate words with gestures, such as pointing to the ground and giving the command to lay down.

The five basic commands are; sit, stay, down, come and heel, but the most common command used the most is NO! The signals you give for each command depend on you, but use them consistently.

All dogs vary in personality. For instance, a herding breed has certain instincts instilled. A hunting breed will excel in fetching, etc, because they were bred to fetch game for their masters and to seek out and scare up prey.

Most guard or watch dogs are larger breeds that intimidate not only with their size but the growl as well. German Shepard, Pinscher and Rottweilers are all intimidating to some point. Although some choose a particular breed simply because they like its size or the general look, most dogs are bred for a specific purpose and are trained accordingly.

If you are considering an electronic collar due to excessive barking, they are generally safe, and highly effective. Once the dog is aware of what the collar does   each time he barks, he will stop. Some owners report that all they have to do is reach for the collar and all barking ceases immediately. It is a personal decision to use this type of collar, the there is controversy surrounding the humane aspect of this k9 dog training aid.
