Labrador Puppy Training: Learning The Basics

labrador puppy trainingLet me stress the importance of positive reinforcement in Labradorpuppy training. This breed is among the most docile and they respond in kind. They are excellent family pets as well as working dogs, especially in hunting water fowl, as these dogs can not get enough time in the water.

By including the entire family in your dogs training, you will ensure a close relationship with all involved. Keep training sessions brief, as attention spans are not fully developed. Five to ten minutes at a time, two to three times per day are sufficient. Begin with the basic commands: sit, stay, down, come, and heel once formal leash training has begun.

Everyone who is involved with the training should learn and use the same signals for each command, or your pup will be totally confused. A dog will associate signals with spoken words. Some people do not realize this, as it is normally a subconscious directive, such as pointing to the ground while saying lay down, or tapping your leg when commanding to come.

Keep each session fun for your dog and it will excel in training. Use your back yard or some other area where distractions are at a minimum. Treat rewards are often used in Labradorpuppy training to entice him into performing popular tricks, such as shake a paw, sit up, and roll over; which are enjoyable for both audience and dog.

An important command is recall, and it can aid in saving his life if he happens to get off leash at some point in a heavy traffic area. Your dog should stop immediately when he hears this command and return to you, no matter what he is doing at the time. You can use the word COME as a recall, and use it with authority. Say his name and the command.

Consistency is the key in any form of training. Never punish your dog for a missed command. Show disapproval and use a disappointing tone. He will know he has done something wrong when there is no reward offered. Then start over. Give high praise for a job well done, and he will be eager to please.

Labrador puppy training will be enjoyable for all involved if you remember to use positive reinforcement, keep sessions short, and be consistent. Oh, and don’t forget the treats!
