Learn
How to Train a Puppy the Right Way
Bringing a new pup home is always exciting.
Your entire family will love the little puppy, and
learning how to train him or her is very important.
Training your puppy the right way is the best way to make
him that valued member of the family. There are plenty of
tricks that a new little doggie can master, including
going up and down the stairs, sitting, and accepting a new
collar.
The best time to introduce the new puppy to your
household is when everyone is present, and when everything
is as calm as possible. Despite what many people
think, giving puppies and kittens as holiday presents isn’t
the best idea, since it’s during a time in which there is a
lot of excitement going on. It’s best to wait until
after the holidays.
You can begin
puppy obedience training shortly after introducing him/her
to the family. If
you live in a multi-story home, the first thing you need to
teach your doggie is how to walk up and down the
stairs. Many of
them are afraid of stairs, and thus don’t know how to climb
them properly.
It’s important for you to start at the bottom of the stairs and
go up one step at a time.
To build confidence, you need to go up the first
step, then encourage your little puppy to join
you. Make sure
the tone of your voice is calm, yet firm, and give the dog a
treat after he takes the first step. Build his confidence up
slowly, and don’t rush the process. Taking one step at a time
is the best thing you can do when teaching with these puppy
training techniques.
Another thing your new doggie should learn is how to
accept its collar. Learning to get used to a
collar is important for every dog to learn, although many
puppies can be baffled and bewildered by the placement of
this equipment.
Many pups constantly try to remove their collar by pulling
and pawing at it.
Fit is extremely important. You need to make sure that
the collar is properly fitted on your puppy by choosing one
that is the right size. Puppies need to feel comfortable
with their collars, so don’t put it on too
tight. Also,
the collar should have an ID tag attached.
Training a puppy on wearing a collar isn’t too hard. You simply
place the collar on her and then allow her to paw it at and
squirm all she wants. Don’t try to soothe the pup,
or you’ll only encourage her behaviour. The best thing you can do is
to ignore the puppy. Whatever you do, don’t punish
or reprimand her.
You can also try to distract your doggie
from her collar with food, toys, and playing. Doing all these positive
things in her collar will help her to get used to
it. After a couple
of days, most pups won’t even know they’re wearing a
collar! Just
remember to keep things simple when
training a new puppy.
