Natural Dog Training: Getting Acquainted
With Your Canine
A lot of dog owners will say that they have
a special bond with their pet. They become more than a
mere possession; they are part of your family. This is
very true. They may even develop personality traits that
mimic yours. A part of
natural dog training is digging deep into your pets psyche
and you may be surprised at what you will
discover.
As we humans have our family unit and circle of friends, so do
canines. In the wild, before they were domesticated, they ran
in packs. There are still packs in the wild today. Wolves are
pack animals, and it is not uncommon for a domesticated dog or
puppy who has been abandoned to be adopted by a wolf pack as
one of their own.
There are reports of Ferrell dog packs all over the country.
Domesticated canines gone wild. There is safety in numbers, and
just as any club or other organization has a leader, so do
they. In this club, the dominant male is leader of the pack. He
is the one to direct, defend and discipline his hierarchy.
The dominant female is the matriarch, but even she is subject
to the wrath of the alpha male. He is the first to eat from a
kill, and he is the one to banish another from their pack.
These groups of dogs are highly organized during a hunt, just
as a group of human hunters plan a strategy. They, however,
need no words. Instinct is what drives them to their
prey.
They value their young and will defend them viciously if
needed. Their pups are taught from the beginning to obey their
elders. A sharp snap on the rump followed by a short yip tells
them the point was made, and then a lick to the face says
lesson learned.
This is communication at its highest. Body signals and eye
contact, a deep growl and baring of the teeth all have a
different meaning. Natural dog training uses these subtle
gestures to an advantage.
The owner becomes the dominant figure of the canines new pack.
Once this has been established, the relationship takes on a
whole new dimension. Your dog will look to you for guidance as
well approval. An eagerness to please will
develop.
Our canines are really not that different from us.
Understanding this takes communication and training to a new
level. Get to know your dogs mannerisms. Look into his eyes and
you will see a deeper wisdom than you thought existed. They
understand more about us than you
know.
